How to Play TIle Matching in Pretty Good MahJongg:
http://www.goodsol.com/pgmj
Tile matching is the classic solitaire game played with MahJongg tiles. The rules are very simple, but the game can be very addictive.
The game begins with a layout of MahJongg tiles, one of the 345 different layouts that you select from the list of games and layouts. The objective is to get rid of all the tiles. You remove tiles in pairs. You can remove a pair of tiles if they are both the same tile and if each tile has at least one of its long edges free. That is, there is no other tile adjacent to it on its level. The long edges of the tile are usually the left and right sides.
If you select Game from the Options menu, there are many different highlighting and color options that help make the levels more obvious, such as by coloring all the tiles that are free and can be paired. In addition, if "Guaranteed Winnable" is checked here, every layout will always be winnable.
If you get stuck and can't find a pair, Pretty Good MahJongg has a easy right click quick move feature. Just right click on a tile and if there is an available matching tile for it, both tiles will be highlighted. Then just left click on one of the highlighted tiles to remove them.
The statusbar at the bottom of the screen tells you how many matches there are, you want to keep this number as high as possible as you remove matches because when there are no more matches, the game is lost. You can then either resign the game, undo to try something else, or shuffle the tiles to create new matches. However, if you shuffle the game cannot count as a win, although you can increase your score.
The basic strategy in tile matching is to remove tiles from the outside or top levels first. You always want to be thinking of how you can create new matches for later moves. The best moves are the ones that create the most new matches.
Have fun! There are 345 different tile matching layouts to choose from, some are easy, some are hard. Most have 144 tiles, but some have less and some have more. For starting out, the layouts called Kids with a number are easy, the number being the number of tiles the layout has (smaller is easier).
